June 25, 2025 – Anti-Fidesz Protests in Budapest

Doubtless a sight not previously observed in what has emerged as an increasingly authoritarian and suppressed Budapest political scene, a formidable mass of mostly quiet demonstrators converged on Fővám Square in Budapest, adjacent to the lateral wing of that city’s massive 1904 Parliament edifice.

Although gender and human rights issues predominated the day’s themes, an increasingly visible Hungarian political opposition headlined by the Tisza Party, was notably visible in these protests, which were the first sets of demonstrations that unfolded throughout the four subsequent days of the city’s Pride Festival.

Numerous public figures, celebrities, writers, actors, musicians and journalists joined over 15,000 disaffected Hungarians and LGBT supporters, filled Fővám Square, as they actively-protested Hungary’s new anti LGBT+ legislation.

Organizers characterized the demonstration as the coming-of-age for a nationwide resistance movement intent on protesting alleged financial corruption and sociopolitical suppression at the hands of the government of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, leader of Hungary’s Nationaist-Populist Fidesz Party.

Hungary’s rising opposition is led by the “Tisza Respect and Freedom” Party’s Péter Magyar, and by the “Democratic Coalition” (DK), previously led by former Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány, who stepped down in May 2025, and now led by his wife Klára Dobrev — former Vice President of the European Parliament.
